Learning About France: Activities

This month, we are learning about France at our house. As I've mentioned in past posts, we are subscribers and huge fans of Little Passports, and use their monthly packages and activities as a starting point for our month long focus on a certain country. (This post contains affiliate links.) This month, Sam and Sofia took their magic scooter to France. Included in this packet was a set of stickers for Yaya's passport, map and suitcase, a postcard of the Eiffel Tower, along with a set … [Read more...]

Black History Month: A Book List

Since 1976, every United States president has designated the month of February as Black History Month -- a time for us to celebrate the achievements of black Americans and recognize their role in history. I'm working on expanding my kids' library to reflect the influential history and achievements of African Americans. In honor of Black History Month, and as a participatory blog in the Multicultural Kids Blog Hop, I thought I would share some of our favorites. (This post contains affiliate … [Read more...]

Adoption Book Reports: “The Colors of Us”

Today's book review is coming to you from Michelle, the blogger behind Trust Me I'm a Mom. Michelle has two daughters, age 3 and 1, and shares lots of fantastic ideas on her blog about serving with kids. You can even have her ideas delivered right to your inbox by signing up for her monthly newsletter. Cute Valentines for Non-Crafty Mamas.

You guys, I stink at doing arts and crafts stuff. You know how every kid's favorite subject at school was art? It was my LEAST favorite. Like, even behind math. I couldn't cut a straight line if my life depended on it, and I can't draw at all. Conversation with Yaya: Yaya: Mom, draw a horse for me. (I sketch something on the magna-doodle.) Me: Here you go. Yaya: No, a HORSE. So as you may have guessed, I'm not attempting any of the ridiculously cute, homemade Valentine's cards … [Read more...]

The Adoptees’ Voices.

So if you haven't seen it, there's AMAZING conversations happening over on a post I penned last week. With the input of some close friends, I shared -- in my own sarcastic way -- comments that are made to us that can be invasive, hurtful and/or upsetting -- to our children as well as to us. I've really enjoyed seeing the response. Adoptive parents, birth mothers, adoptees, prospective adoptive parents, friends and family of adoptive parents are all weighing in. For the most part, everyone has … [Read more...]

Just a heads up that the blog may be down for a bit this weekend  while it's being switched to a self-hosted blog -- but don't worry -- we're not going anywhere and will be back soon! Have a great weekend! … [Read more...]

Ten Things NOT to Say to Adoptive Parents.

A few days ago my 10 months pregnant friend at The Measured Mom posted a great list of things NOT to say to a pregnant woman, and politely suggest some alternatives.  I laughed out loud reading some of them, remembering how many of them were said to me -- and, shamefully, how many I have said to my pregnant friends, since I have forgotten what it's like to walk around with another human being inside of you! When I'm with my fellow adoptive girlfriends, you will often hear us say, "Oh, you … [Read more...]

How to Get Your Kids to Sit Still in Church: JUST KIDDING!

When I blogged about adopting toddlers last week, I shared that church is not exactly easy for us these days. While Baby Boy danced his way through a two hour gospel service when we attended church in Los Angeles this past fall, he cannot make it through even a few minutes on a typical Sunday. Worse than getting through a church service in the sanctuary with him is taking him to the nursery. Baby Boy doesn't like to be confined, for one thing. And in front of our nursery sits a table full of … [Read more...]
