Kitchen Cabinet Makeover: Part 2.

A couple of months ago, I started painting our kitchen cabinets with Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White. (You can read a step-by-step guide of how I did it by clicking here.) I'm finally finished! Here's a couple of "before" shots (please tell me why I photographed my kitchen when it was this messy?!): And here's the big reveal: I feel as though it's SO much brighter -- don't you? A couple of other little projects ended up happening along with this... I've always loved … [Read more...]

Adoption Book Reports: “ABC Adoption and Me”

Hey guys!  I'm super excited to bring you another Adoption Book Report. Today's book review comes to you from an adoptive mama of three! This mama and her children reviewed the book ABC Adoption and Me by Gayle H. Swift. (This post contains affiliate links.) Summary of Book (from Amazon): A book about adoption that celebrates the miracle of family and addresses the difficult issues as well. With charming, exuberant illustrations and a diverse representation of families, ABC, Adoption & … [Read more...]

Adoptive Families: Dealing with the Questions.

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about things that are often said to adoptive parents, ranging from innocent, well-meaning statements to ones that are downright offensive. But here's the thing -- I can beg on my blog until I'm blue in the face for people to use terms  "biological child" and "birth mom", but the questions and comments will still come, and I have to figure out how to handle my own responses appropriately. While we were in the process to bring Baby Boy home, there was so much … [Read more...]

Cute Valentines for Non-Crafty Mamas.

You guys, I stink at doing arts and crafts stuff. You know how every kid's favorite subject at school was art? It was my LEAST favorite. Like, even behind math. I couldn't cut a straight line if my life depended on it, and I can't draw at all. Conversation with Yaya: Yaya: Mom, draw a horse for me. (I sketch something on the magna-doodle.) Me: Here you go. Yaya: No, a HORSE. So as you may have guessed, I'm not attempting any of the ridiculously cute, homemade Valentine's cards … [Read more...]

The Adoptees’ Voices.

So if you haven't seen it, there's AMAZING conversations happening over on a post I penned last week. With the input of some close friends, I shared -- in my own sarcastic way -- comments that are made to us that can be invasive, hurtful and/or upsetting -- to our children as well as to us. I've really enjoyed seeing the response. Adoptive parents, birth mothers, adoptees, prospective adoptive parents, friends and family of adoptive parents are all weighing in. For the most part, everyone has … [Read more...]

Ten Things NOT to Say to Adoptive Parents.

A few days ago my 10 months pregnant friend at The Measured Mom posted a great list of things NOT to say to a pregnant woman, and politely suggest some alternatives.  I laughed out loud reading some of them, remembering how many of them were said to me -- and, shamefully, how many I have said to my pregnant friends, since I have forgotten what it's like to walk around with another human being inside of you! When I'm with my fellow adoptive girlfriends, you will often hear us say, "Oh, you … [Read more...]

How to Get Your Kids to Sit Still in Church: JUST KIDDING!

When I blogged about adopting toddlers last week, I shared that church is not exactly easy for us these days. While Baby Boy danced his way through a two hour gospel service when we attended church in Los Angeles this past fall, he cannot make it through even a few minutes on a typical Sunday. Worse than getting through a church service in the sanctuary with him is taking him to the nursery. Baby Boy doesn't like to be confined, for one thing. And in front of our nursery sits a table full of … [Read more...]

Adoption Book Reports: God Found Us You

I'm so excited to share our first review for "Adoption Book Reports". Our first reviewer is none other than one of my real-life-besties, Mia. Mia is the mother of THREE -- two little girls, who are Yaya's real-life-besties, and a little boy in China, who will hopefully be joining their family this spring! Mia blogs beautifully about her family's adoption experience over at Unto Adoption.Mia and her daughters reviewed the book God Found Us You, by Lisa Tawn Bergren.Summary of book (from … [Read more...]

Multicultural Children’s Book Day: Celebrating Diversity in Children’s Literature.

You guys know how passionate I am about raising kids who are globally-minded citizens. That's why I am stoked to team up with an amazing group of bloggers for Multicultural Children's Book Day. As we began to educate ourselves on becoming a transracial family when we set out to adopt from Africa, I became grossly aware that the vast collection of books we possessed was not very diverse in the characters and cultures represented. Despite census data that shows 37% of the US … [Read more...]

What You Need to Know About Adopting Toddlers.

If you follow me over on the Encompass blog, you may know about an adoption series I'm doing over there called "What You Need to Know", featuring different stories from adoptive families. So far, I've had the privilege of "interviewing" two amazing sets of parents, who have shared their stories about fostering a child and adopting an older, waiting child internationally. I've reached out to other adoptive parents who will soon be sharing their stories about their adoption experiences, and … [Read more...]
